Speaking recently to the IT Architect-IT Infrastructure Manager for a firm that implements IT Infrastructure Solutions to medium to large sized companies we touched on the importance of the “harvesting” phase of a project.
“Regarding the planning for projects, it’s very important to have a method and I think the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method is a very interesting solution to roll out at the start of a project. Basically in the first phases of IT architecture you have to understand many things, we call it “Harvesting”. During this time you need to gather all relevant information regarding client current situation e.g. current architecture, relevant staff, reporting lines, business plan etc. You can then start to work on the future “to be state” that the client is looking to get to.
This “harvesting” phase is where LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is very interesting. The client and consultants / IT architect can build their current and future state and ensure that everyone is on the same page. This then helps when developing the very detailed requirements because by referring back to the Lego Serious Play models you basically have a very high level blueprint, or at least a set of guiding principles or architectural principles.
Without this very key and important initial phase the foundations for the project will not be sound. This can often lead to troubled projects. This is especially the case when you consider global projects where it might not be possible to have constant team contact. Lego could also help to define the end to end picture or the big picture, especially important if you have teams working on sub sections in a project.”
